As a business owner, it’s important to strive for great leadership. Even if you don’t have the experience or lack confidence in your ability to lead, everyone has the potential to become a great leader. Keep in mind the three principles of leadership below, and the rest is in the details.
- Become Someone You’d Want to Follow
Draw from your past experiences (good or bad) with following, and remind yourself what made you appreciate the leaders in your life (or not). Was it humility, integrity or discipline? Then you must work toward becoming that person. It won’t happen overnight, but practice makes perfect!
- Mutual Respect
Your team should respect you, but remember that respect cannot be taken, only given. True respect will motivate your team to execute your vision more effectively. If you rely on your character over your title, then it’s more likely they will respect you.
You must first respect your team to be respected by them, however. Show your respect by listening to feedback, showing appropriate amounts of empathy for their struggles, and acknowledging their achievements and efforts.
- Take Responsibility
The first two steps are about your team, but don’t forget that you’re in charge. You are the one with the vision, and you are the one responsible for getting everyone there. You are the leader, and the performance of the entire group reflects on you directly. So, don’t worry about making tough decisions. In the end, you have to do what is right for your business.
